East Asia, alternately Northeast Asia, is the eastern subregion of Asia, defined in both geographical and ethno-cultural terms. States of East Asia include China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Chinese special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. Hong Kong and Macau are officially highly autonomous but are under effective Chinese sovereignty.
Major religions in East Asia include Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Taoism, and Shintoism. Popular languages in East Asia include Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Major ethnic groups of East Asia include the Han (Chinese), Yamato Japanese, and Koreans.
East Asians comprise around 1.7 billion people, making up about 38% of the population in Continental Asia and 22% of the global population.
