North America Sustainability Issues

Environmental issues in the USA include climate change, energy, species conservation, invasive species, deforestation, mining, nuclear accidents, pesticides, pollution, waste and over-population. Despite taking hundreds of measures, the rate of environmental issues is rapidly increasing instead of reducing. In Canada, they include air and water pollution, climate change, mining and logging.  The increase in greenhouse gas emissions in Canada between 1990 and 2015 was mainly due to larger emissions from mining, oil, and gas extraction and transport.

According to a 2009 report, around 60 percent of Americans live in areas where air pollution has reached unhealthy levels that can make people sick. The United States is the second largest emitter, after China, of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. The energy policy of the United States is widely debated; many call on the country to take a leading role in fighting global warming. The U.S. is one of only three countries that has not signed up to the Kyoto Protocol.

Relating to the 2019’s Canada’s Changing Climate Report which was written by several scientists from different institutions around the globe, it states that the impacts of climate change on Atlantic Canada will be very diverse/unique. One of the impacts is that the sea ice will become thinner and will also form for much shorter periods throughout the year. And without the amount of sea ice that the region usually gets, wave seasons will result in becoming more intense. Another fact that is stated in the report is that Atlantic Canada will see a relative rise in sea levels out of the whole country – a rise which is estimated to be 75 to 100cm by the year 2100. Scientists also predict that even if emissions decrease or increase, the 20-cm rise is expected to take place during the course of the next 20 to 30 years.

Violent crime in the United States refers to murder, rape and sexual assault, robbery, and assault. Violent crime in the United States has fallen over the last two decades, however, the number of reported violent crimes has risen slightly in the past few years. Among the various types of violent crime reported in the United State, aggravated assault is the most common. In 2017, the crime rate (the number of reported instances per 100,000 inhabitants) was 248.9 for aggravated assault, making a considerable contribution to the overall violent crime rate of 382.9.
